    Puttin’ on the Fitz / Special Student Exhibition

    PLATFORM is very pleased to present a special 2-day exhibition of advanced student photography and student video/film work from the School of Art at The University of Manitoba. Bringing together a unique selection of work from Winnipeg's younger generation of artists, the exhibition primarily explores notions around family and home. Ideas about familial lineage, absence, and memory play off each other within the subtleties of our unique prairie landscape. The technical approaches to image making presented are as layered and diverse as the values and customs that compose our city: accidental light spills disrupt traditional darkroom photography; conceptual strategies explore the photograph as keeper of time; and staged studio compositions with toy miniatures all probe the complexities of communication.

    Photoworks, 1969-2011

    A major contributor to conceptual art, Garry Neill Kennedy's artistic career spans over forty years and his work is recognized across Canada and abroad. As head of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design for more than 23 years, he revolutionized the way art was taught there, while positioning Atlantic Canada at the heart of the conceptual art movement. This is not only the first exhibition of Kennedy's work to focus on his photographic output, but it also aims to foster a better understanding of the work of the artist as a whole, and his contribution to the evolution of contemporary art in Canada and in the Atlantic Region.

    Pinhole Artist Collective: be.still

    PLATFORM centre for photographic + digital arts is pleased to present be.still, the latest exhibition by Winnipeg’s Pinhole Artist Collective (PAC). Continuing to balance the push/pull of the individual and the collective, the group has drawn images from their monthly forays over the past year. Determining destinations by consensus - Spirit Sands, the English Garden, the bridges of Winnipeg, Narcisse, and more (sometimes deliberate and premeditated; sometimes more whimsical and weather dependent) - upon arrival they create independent works, albeit linked by place, conversation, and time. And so it is that leisurely exposures, long discussions, and days of driving yield images grounded in the collective that celebrate the individual. In conjunction with this exhibition, PAC will launch a publication related to their recent exhibition of solargaphs.

    CHERYL SOURKES: *Best*Amateur*Webcams*

    PLATFORM centre for photographic + digital arts is pleased to present the solo exhibition, *Best*Amateur*Webcams*, by Toronto-based artist Cheryl Sourkes.

    Featuring a new interactive data projection and a selection of digital prints, *Best*Amateur*Webcams* is the final exhibition in PLATFORM's thematic year where the Centre has presented research stemming from the idea of the palimpsest. This research has attempted to correlate the ancient palimpsest (ie: re-writable history) as a contemporary metaphor for photographic practices.

    Andrew Harwood: Séancé

    PLATFORM is very excited to be presenting local Toronto transplant, Andrew Harwood, in his first solo exhibition in Winnipeg. Infamous in the Toronto Queen West scene as an artist and performer (under the stage name Madame Zsa Zsa), Harwood is crafting a new body of work confusing the internationally-renowned history of Winnipeg séance photography circa 1900, and the contemporary queer bar dance circuit. Using a hybrid installation of large-scale photography, video installation, and glue-gun sequin crafts, Harwood's Séancé will be a feast for the eyes and senses!

    ZIMOUN 150 prepared dc-motors, filler wire 1.0mm sound installation

    "Zimoun breaks the distance we think exists between structure and chaos. Ordered, structured, and temporal-minded work enables the organic creation of noise by pared-down elements that evoke a Minimalist ethos. Though you stop to listen, you hear what you might have missed. Planned and ordered mechanisms enable minimal materials to make the noise they happen to make.     HAUNTINGS I

    Guy Maddin summons the unmade and lost films of F.W. Murnau, Fritz Lang, Hollis Frampton, Victor Sjöström, Jean Vigo, Kenji Mizoguchi and Josef von Sternberg, and rescues cinematographic ghosts from oblivion. Consigned to limbo, now resurrected and remade, he projects these masterpieces so that they might continue to haunt film history.
