PLATFORM centre is pleased to present an exhibition from Winnipeg based artist Kristina Banera. The show, Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana, runs from 11 January – 22 February, 2019. An opening reception is scheduled for Friday 11 January at 7 PM. The event is free and open to the public.

Banera’s art practices examines the flaws in our memories and how they become lost and muddled over time. These ideas are physically explored using digital mapping and projection to further consider digital platforms. This Gallery 2 exhibition will consist of digital photographic prints and video installation that create links and tensions between one another to evoke unease and confusion. 

Over time our memories shift and change and I am interested in this deterioration. This has all stemmed from a long-term stream of work in which I have dealt with my recollection of my hometown of Lockport and my childhood home and the interrelations that inhabited these specific memories of the past. As I age, memories become blurred and change due to new understanding of the history of a specific place (Lockport in this case), distance and time.

Foremost the artist is interested in creating psychologically informed moments within the work that are surreal and hinge on fading memories. Utilizing repetition through materials and techniques, the exhibition speaks to the passing of time, confusion, mis-interpretation and to the blurring of meaning.

BIOGRAPHY
Kristina Banera is an emerging interdisciplinary artist from Lockport, Manitoba, currently based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She received her Bachelor of Fine Art honours degree at the University of Manitoba, with a concentration in studio art. Her work often integrates sculpture and digital medial to explore psychology of space, the home, and the interrelations that constitute it. Banera has been exhibited nationally in galleries, artist run centres and alternative spaces.
